Should net neutrality be restored?

This is one of the most controversial questions of this era.

What is Net Neutrality?

It is simply the principle that ISPs should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source and without favouring or blocking particular products or websites. The phrase “Net Neutrality” was first used by a law professor Tim Wu at Columbia University in 2003.

Net Neutrality Law

December 21, 2010, the FCC passed a set of six net “neutrality principles”:

1. Transparency

2.No blocking

3.Level playing field

4.Network management

5.Vigilance

The above laws emphasises:

1. NN applies to the entire Internet
2. ISPs will continue to rake users if there is no net neutrality
3. Small businesses could suffer
4. Fewer businesses, less competition and limited costumers.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

1. Net Neutrality preserves free speech on the internet by prohibiting ISPs from blocking content.
2. Net Neutrality protects consumers by preventing ISPs from ruling over the internet.
3. Net Neutrality promotes competition by providing a level playing field for start-ups.

Cons:

1. Net Neutrality regulations are reductant because the internet developed amazingly well in their absence.
2. Net Neutrality created onerous and overreaching regulations to govern the internet.
3. Net Neutrality reduces investment in the internet services resulting in less access and expensive.

Final Words

Net Neutrality is the key to freedom and fair competition on the internet, and its repeal would not only result in irreparable damage to consumers but also everyone in almost every industry. The debate will continue as time passes, but we just might not have enough time to actually do something about it. Despite the arguments, I believe that ISPs shouldn’t have the right to decide the websites we can access, what online stores we can shop at, or which streaming services we can use.
